Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! Review and Guide

Masaaki Yuasa directing a show about how animation actually gets made, in which imagination is rendered literally on screen and the biggest obstacle to art is always the budget.

What the story actually is

Midori Asakusa fills notebooks with mechanical and architectural designs but cannot finish anything. Sayaka Kanamori sees a business. Tsubame Mizusaki is a model with wealthy parents who wants to animate rather than perform. Together they form an animation club that their school does not want to fund.

Each arc follows the production of one short film from concept to screening, and the series is unusually honest about what that involves. Deadlines slip, scope gets cut, sound design is an afterthought until it is a crisis, and someone has to negotiate with the student council for money.

The imagination sequences

When Asakusa and Mizusaki start designing, the show drops into their heads and animates the idea directly. A rusted fan becomes a flight machine, a school corridor becomes a fortress, and the two of them run through worlds that do not exist yet. These sequences are the reason Yuasa was the right director.

Crucially, the fantasy always cuts back to the practical problem. The show is arguing that imagination is the easy part, and that the discipline of turning it into finished frames is where the real work lives. Kanamori exists to make that argument.

It is genuinely about craft

Eizouken teaches animation principles in passing without ever becoming a lecture. Weight, follow-through, the difference between what looks correct and what reads correctly at speed, why a mecha's joints need clearance, why sound sells an impact more than the drawing does.

Anyone who has worked on a creative project with a deadline will recognise the dynamic between the three leads. Kanamori in particular is a rare thing in anime: a producer character written with respect rather than as an obstacle.

Who should watch it

Watch it if you make things, if you are interested in how animation works, or if you want a Yuasa production that is more accessible than Devilman Crybaby or Mind Game. The character designs are stylised but the show is warm and low-conflict.

Skip it if you want traditional plot stakes. Nobody is in danger and there is no rival club to defeat. The tension is entirely about whether a short film gets finished on time.

Standout Episodes

  • Episode 1 The first flight sequence, which establishes the imagination-to-reality cut that the whole series runs on.
  • Episode 5 The first screening. The show's clearest statement about the gap between intention and finished work.
  • Episode 9 Sound design becomes the crisis, and the series gets specific about a part of production most shows ignore.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! FAQ

Do the character designs put people off?

Sometimes, initially. They are deliberately unpolished and take an episode or two to settle. The animation underneath them is exceptional.

Is it a good entry point for Yuasa?

Yes, probably the best one. It has his visual invention without the intensity of his more confrontational work.

Is it based on a manga?

Yes, by Sumito Oowara. The anime covers roughly the first three volumes.

Will I learn anything real about animation?

More than you would expect. It is not a tutorial, but the production problems it dramatises are accurate ones.
